Interpretive Master Plan Reveals Tremendous Heritage & Tourism Potential
The Susquehanna Greenway links the multitude of recreational, historic, environmental, and cultural assets along the Susquehanna River’s nearly 500 miles and 22 Pennsylvania counties. To heighten the public’s awareness of these river corridor-based assets while accentuating their collective relationship, the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership has developed an Interpretive Master Plan for the Susquehanna River Water Trail and Susquehanna Greenway.
The plan recommends development of interpretive media (signs, online tour guides, brochures, podcasts, etc.) that link together resources and attractions under the Susquehanna Greenway brand. The intent is to help visitors and residents discover and explore the Greenway: the historic downtowns and natural areas it encompasses; the trails, bike paths, cultural assets, and recreation it offers; and to remember ‘Susquehanna Greenway,’ as a destination in and of itself. The interpretive plan is step one in achieving that objective and in helping to build the partnerships vital to its creation.

{Susquehanna State Park} The Susquehanna Greenway The Susquehanna Greenway is a planned corridor of green infrastructure composed of interconnected water-based and land-based trails, parks, river access points, riparian buffers, and pathways linking the Susquehanna River and its West Branch with cities, towns, rural areas, conserved natural lands and forests in Pennsylvania. It will be nearly 500 miles in length, making it Pennsylvania’s largest greenway. It will provide a green corridor along Pennsylvania’s longest river that contributes nearly half of the fresh water entering the Chesapeake Bay. The Susquehanna Greenway is a large landscape initiative with a holistic approach to conserving, restoring and interpreting the natural and cultural heritage of the Susquehanna Valley. The Greenway will engage and connect people and communities with each other and their natural environment, providing new opportunities for recreation and alternatives to automotive travel, linking residential areas with schools, libraries, and downtowns. The Greenway is about containing sprawl, fostering smart growth, revitalizing river communities that have lost their industrial base, and ultimately it is about creating healthy, sustainable Susquehanna communities. |

For the past five years, the planning team and founding board have worked to create a vision and a plan for the Susquehanna Greenway: The Susquehanna Greenway Strategic Action Plan. As one of the many initial tasks, the planning team and founding board has transitioned to an advisory role. A new Board of Directors has been recruited to run the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership. The Partnership is being established as an independent 501(c)(3) organization and professionals in the field of project development, education and outreach, and fundraising have been hired. Four regional lead organizations, comprised of state and local governments and private sector organizations, have begun education and outreach programs. |
