A magical Christmastime experience is coming that families have made a tradition for years. During the holiday rail excursions, passengers will experience the reading of The Polar Express and a visit from Santa and his friends, Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman, Buddy the Elf, and many more.

 

The train is fully decorated inside and out. Each train ride is about an hour long (passengers should arrive a half-hour before the scheduled departure). The passenger cars are heated, but it is suggested to bring a blanket.

 

Bloomsburg – Nov. 26, 27

These train rides travel from Sherwin-Williams on Market Street in Bloomsburg to Catawissa and back. On Saturday, Nov. 26, the train leaves at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. On Sunday, Nov. 27, it departs at noon, 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. They are sponsored by Downtown Bloomsburg, Inc. and the Columbia-Montour Chamber of Commerce.

Sunbury – Dec. 2, 4

This holiday train departs from behind Zimmerman Motors (located on East Market Street) in Sunbury to Anthracite Road and returns. On Friday, Dec. 2, the train leaves at 5, 7, and 9 p.m. On Sunday, Dec. 4, departures are at noon, 2, 4, and 6 p.m. They are sponsored by Fort Discovery Playground.

Williamsport – Dec. 9, 10, 11

This train will take a trip through the holiday festivities from Maynard Street (Burger King) to the Williamsport Regional Airport. On Friday, Dec. 9, rides are at 6 and 8 p.m. On Saturday, Dec. 10, they are at 10 a.m., noon, 2, 4, and 6 p.m. On Sunday, Dec. 11, the train leaves at noon, 2, 4, and 6 p.m. They are sponsored by the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce.

Bellefonte – Dec. 16, 17, 18

This train excursion travels from the Bellefonte train station (320 W. High Street) to the Pleasant Gap fish hatchery and return. On Friday Dec., 16, rides leave at 6 and 8 p.m. On Saturday, Dec. 17, the train departs at 10 a.m., noon, 2, 4, and 6 p.m. On Sunday, Dec. 18, rides are at noon, 2, 4, and 6 p.m. They are sponsored by the Bellefonte Historical Railroad Society.

North Shore Railroad donates the locomotives and crew, and Penn Valley Railroad provides the passenger trains and on-board service. The SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority receives no funds from the region’s passenger excursions, but pays for the special liability insurance policy for excursions throughout the year.
